PS Hitsquad delivers latest single 'What Would You Do?'

This is not hyperbole, I think Drill is the most influential genre of the past decade. Its signifiers are constantly popping up with every new release be it from within the scene or from other genres. The skating 808s, haunting orchestration and rattling hi-hats are just another branch on a tree spanning decades of musical evolution, however, they are arranged in an idiosyncratic way to present something appealing to the ears and antagonistic to the senses. The former point is further strengthened by this Valentine’s Day release from HitSquad’s PS.

From the moment the melody floats over, this will be a departure from the usual Hitsquad subject matter. The familiar black, grey and white colour connotations of Drill, are replaced with brighter more saturated tones, possibly hinting at an entire spectrum of perspectives awaiting the genre’s exploration. Despite its aforementioned influence, this culture and all it brings would barely be in secondary school. There is so much more to hear.

Thematically, the lyricism follows a blueprint chartered by Curtis Jackson, here PS showcases a side of himself that would surprise many but ultimately exists concealed underneath layers of street politics, capitalistic drive and bravado. Every genre is governed by its norms, and what may seem like another ballad in another musical styling, is poignant here. It is a great declaration of love, surrender and ultimately vulnerability. I saw a meme somewhere that read to love and be loved is to feel the warmth of the sun on both sides–isn’t that what we all want?

Regardless of postcode, or social class, this at the very least is the essence that ties us all together. It’s possibly this desire that invigorates PS’ performance here, with a strong command of the pocket, he meditates on a series of dreams and anxieties, present in all relationships. The flow on this sounds refined and confident yet nimble too, there’s an agility that entices you to bop your head in steady approval, and smile over the most significant things in life.
