In a commodified world where we find ourselves both the consumer and producer in the age of panopticontent, there is an increasing sense of scepticism with the things we digest. Every candid look into someone’s life eventually reveals itself to be a sponsored campaign, gross oversights are the result of a focus group meeting.
Whether a deliberate attempt to enhance negative press in an unstable political climate, victim by association (Wiley’s historic antisemitism) or just plain ignorance, the original artwork’s controversy could’ve easily derailed the momentum of the single.

It is still early to fully comprehend the impact of this controversy however the eldest of the Adenuga siblings has always benefited from his adaptability and constant evolution; which doesn’t end on Gas Me Up. With its chorus steeped in reverb and unusual song structure, it seems Skepta’s Mas Tiempo excursion has influenced this new direction. The distant arpeggios, celestial pads and gradual rise to that syrupy drop all further point to the influences of House music, also the fact that the single features an acapella b-side further drives this point home.
Lyrically, Skepta is as self-assured as ever, even going so far as to sing a really pleasant melody on the hook’s refrain. Since we last heard of him on 2019’s Ignorance is Bliss he has become somewhat of a renaissance man and this latest helping sounds more like the victory lap of an artist who has been vitalised by a newfound perspective.
