We're only 15 days into the new year yet 2024 just keeps bringing surprises to our ears. First Dizzee Rascal, D Double E, and JME show us that grime is less about the age and more about the energy, and now JME lends his talents to another monumental return.

House of Pharaohs & JME

Flowing seamlessly over a beat produced by Grime-maverick JME, House of Pharaohs sound energised after a two-year break from releasing music. The UK's best-kept collective is comfortably right at home over a minimal grime beat that wouldn't sound out of place on JME's classic projects like 'Blam!' or 'Famous?'.

Whilst the track is just shy of 3 minutes, the chemistry is palpable from the second you press play until the last lingering delay of that synth stab. Further, despite being a sonic departure from the group's last project 'Seasons II', the members don't miss a single 2-step, trading bars with one another in and amongst the jittery hi-hats, ambient pad; and that chest-rattling bassline.

This collaboration also highlights the timelessness of this music of ours, a la Afrofuturism; this instrumental could easily fit into a set on Axe, Flava FM 87.6, or Deja Vu 92.3 FM. Speaking of Deja Vu, JME perfectly matches the intensity of the beat with a hook that brings the venom of that legendary intro from '96 Bars of Revenge'. Maybe the key to grime's lifespan isn't linear, artists, DJ's, and producers alike laid the foundations of this genre decades ago, ignoring that would be detrimental - but staying in that past would also do this style a disservice.

From wave music to drill, grime's influence permeates throughout the UK's musical soundscape, exploring its reach might be the key.
